Newcastle United are targeting Manchester United’s attacking midfielder Jesse Lingard, according to The Telegraph.
Newly appointed head coach Steve McClaren has already recruited Lingard once before, during his tenure at Derby County. The 22-year-old joined the Rams on a half-season loan last February and made 14 appearances for the Championship outfit – scoring twice in the process.
He is a highly rated youngster who shot to prominence when he scored four goals on his debut for Birmingham City, on yet another loan spell.
Lingard is currently away with the England under-21 squad preparing for the European Championship, meaning Newcastle may have delay their approach but face missing out on yet another target by doing so.
The Magpies are desperate to find alternatives to Malaga striker Juanmi, who looks set to join Southampton after they activated his €7million release clause.
Meanwhile, reports suggest Dutch striker Bas Dost could be unveiled by Newcastle before Friday, after agreeing a €12million fee with the Bundesliga outfit. The Magpies also hold an interest in QPR’s Charlie Austin and West Ham’s Andy Carroll.
McClaren will want to make sure he has adequate quality and depth in the squad before he the new Premier League campaign gets underway.
