VfL Wolfsburg sporting director Klaus Allofs has ruled out a summer exit for Newcastle target Bas Dost, insisting the Dutchman wants to stay at the Volkswagen Arena.
Dost bagged 19 goals in all competitions last season and has attracted attention from clubs across Europe. As a result of his fine goalscoring form, he has been heavily linked with a move away from the Bundesliga outfit with Newcastle and emerging as the front runners for his signature.
However, in an interview with Wolfsburger Nachrichten, Klaus Allofs confirmed the 26-year-old is happy at Wolfsburg and wants to stay. “Bas told us he wants to stay,” he said. “They [Bas Dost and Aaron Hunt] are happy that they can play with us.”
Even if they managed to agree a fee with Wolfsburg, the Magpies would still need to persuade Bas Dost to give up European football in favour of a move to a mid-table Premier League club, after the Dutch striker’s goals helped guide Wolfsburg to a second place finish in the Bundesliga last season, meaning the club will be playing Champions League football next season.
It is believed Newcastle will look to pursue higher priority targets, such as Charlie Austin, first.
