Newcastle United are keen on bringing Wolfsburg striker Bas Dost to St James’ Park this summer and are currently leading the chase for his signature, according to German news outlet Bild.
Another outlet, Algemeen Dagblad, even went as far as suggesting Newcastle have already held talks with Dost’s representatives, but this seems a little premature.
The Magpies are confident of fending off stiff competition from a long list of potential suitors, including Swansea City and Southampton, to secure his signature, but Wolfsburg’s asking price could be a potential stumbling block. The German club reportedly want €20million for the Dutch striker (working out around £14.5million when converted into sterling).
The 26-year-old netted eighteen times in thirty appearances last season, and even picked up four assists in the process. A goal scoring record that you would expect would more than justify his price-tag, but interested parties will not be so sure. Although Dost enjoyed a purple patch in the winter, in which he scored fourteen goals in nine games, in the resulting eighteen games, he scored just four times.
If Newcastle were to follow up their initial interest and agree a fee, they hope they will be able to tempt him to Tyneside with the added lure of playing with his fellow compatriots Tim Krul, Vurnon Anita, Daryl Janmaat and Siem de Jong.
