Newcastle United have begun talks with Malaga with regard to signing their young forward Juanmi, according to various news outlets including the Daily Mail.
The 22-year-old, who netted 8 times in 34 appearances last season, has been closely monitored by the Magpies for more than a year and Steve McClaren is believed to be confident of signing him.
Malaga are desperate to wrap up a deal quickly and, due to their difficult financial position, they could settle for as little as €7million, working out around £5million when converted into sterling.
Steve McClaren is hoping Juanmi will be the first of two striker arrivals this summer, having identified the goalscoring department as one of the areas that needs strengthening this summer. The other striker expected to arrive on Tyneside is Queens Park Rangers striker Charlie Austin.
The 25-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to Tyneside over the past month and, according to the Mirror’s Simon Bird, is expecting to be unveiled as a Newcastle player next week.
Should Newcastle fail in their attempts to land either striker, they are expected to turn their attentions to Saido Berahino and Bas Dost. The former is highly-rated by the board of directors, but his £20million price-tag is a potential stumbling block.
