Shortly after announcing Steve McClaren as the new head coach of Newcastle United, the Magpies released a statement regarding further changes in the boardroom.
Mike Ashley has stepped down from his role in the boardroom and finance director John Irving has left the club. McClaren has been appointed to the board and will become the first head coach in the premier league with a role in the Board of Directors.
Managing director Lee Charnley had this to say about the latest developments:
“This is a very positive step forward for the Club and I am delighted that Steve, Graham (Carr) and Bob (Moncur) will join me on the board.
“It was particularly important for us that the head coach also became a board member in order to gain a full understanding and appreciation for the Club and its operations as a whole, not just the football side. In Steve we have an individual who embraced that responsibility.
“Graham and Bob’s passion for the Club is beyond question and I believe given the collective skills, knowledge and experience, together, we are incredibly strong.”
