Incoming manager Steve McClaren will put Cheick Tiote’s contract issue at the top of his list of priorities, according to the Shield Gazette.
Tiote, who’s been linked with moves to Southampton and West Ham in recent months, has played under the former England manager whilst at FC Twente and McClaren wants to make sure that Newcastle retain his services.
The tough tackling Ivorian has two years left on his current contract and his group of representatives are seeking an extension.
However, due to Tiote’s injury concerns and disciplinary issues, the Magpies were reluctant to succumb to his demands. In fact, the club were even willing to listen to offers from other clubs, but this now seems unlikely with the new manager coming in.
Upon Tiote’s move to the north west, McClaren predicted that he would become a fan favourite: “Cheick’s a physical player, but also very fair. He’s got a good engine and could prove a real hit in the premier league.”
