Newcastle United will not be following up their initial interest in Ghanaian winger Andre Ayew, according to The Chronicle.
With his contract set to expire this summer, Ayew looked set for a free transfer to Newcastle but, following unsuccessful talks with the club, the chances of a move happening seem remote.
Lee Charnley, and his team, believe the 25-year-old’s wage demands and signing on fee, coupled with the agent’s costs, do not represent value for money.
Instead, Ayew – who netted 11 times in 28 appearances for Olympique de Marseille last season – looks set for a move to Italian giants AS Roma.
Meanwhile, Newcastle will continue their search for alternatives for the Ghana international, but a new wide-midfielder is low on their priorities this summer, on the grounds that the squad has plenty of players in those particular areas.
Sylvain Marveaux could be handed a Newcastle life-line by new boss Steve McClaren, while Sammy Ameobi could still put pen to paper on a contract extension, adding further depth to the squad’s wide areas. Remy Cabella, Yoan Gouffran and Rolando Aarons are all expected to remain on Tyneside this summer, but Gabriel Obertan has been told he can leave the club this summer.
