Initial enquiries made for Monaco defender

Newcastle United have progressed in the possibility of signing Monaco defender Aymen Abdennour, according to Le 10 Sport.

The current Ligue 1 star has been expected to leave Leonardo Jardim’s side this summer for some time, and European talents such as Arsenal, Barcelona and Juventus have been joined in the chase by Newcastle.

Having been a pivotal figure in his side’s Champions League campaign, Abdennour is now believed to have been intrigued by the potential move to St James’ Park, and is happy to join the Premier League outfit – dependant on the interest of other clubs.

The Magpies will have to wait to see if Arsene Wenger or Luis Enrique offers a deal to the 25-year-old, who wishes to consider all offers before making a decision regarding his future. While Newcastle may struggle to offer the wages of other clubs, should they opt for the preferred targets, Abdennour could be given the all clear to head to the Toon.

News of a potential deal comes shortly after recent comments from the player’s agent, who confirmed they had received a number of offers from across Europe for the in-form star.

“Given the season that Aymen had, there is interest from all over the world,” he said. “We have received calls from clubs and sporting directors, but for now nothing [has been decided].

“Clubs like Valencia, Newcastle, Tottenham, Inter Milan and Wolfsburg have called. We have received concrete offers from these teams, and they are really interested in Aymen.”

Abdennour, who has made 33 appearances for the Tunisian national side, could be considered as somewhat of a coup for Newcastle should a deal go ahead.
