Newcastle have been offered the chance to sign highly-rated Schalke defender Joel Matip, according to The Chronicle.
The Cameroonian has one year left on his contract with the Bundesliga outfit, and will be shopped this summer following a disappointing season.
Newcastle’s defence was woeful last season, with only QPR (73) conceding more than the Toon’s 63 league goals last term.
Lacking centre-back depth, Matip would come in and compete alongside Fabricio Coloccini, Mike Williamson and Steven Taylor in what is a pretty shambolic back four.
Able to play in defensive midfield as well, his versatility could prove mighty useful for the club, considering the terrible fortunes we’ve had in terms on injuries, especially at the back.
A £10m transfer is being spoken about for Matip, as a move looks increasingly likely.
