Patrick Vieira will only consider an approach from Newcastle if they are prepared to ‘give him the tools to be a successful manager.’
The Manchester City under 21 boss has been heavily linked with the head coach vacancy at St James’ Park over the past few days and is now expected to meet with managing director Lee Charnley in the next 48 hours to discuss his terms.
Vieira spent last week studying for his UEFA Pro License and has revealed his plans of managing a team at some point, but only if they give him backing.
“I’m happy with the way I am developing as a manager and a young coach,” he said.
“It’s about the vision. I’ve been here for three years from the B licence to the pro licence and I really know myself. I really know which kind of manager I want to be.
“They don’t try to put something in my head. It’s about who I am as a person and how I see the game and how they can give me the tools to be a successful manager.”
Newcastle still need to convince Vieira that they are prepared to match his level of ambition and, even then, his appointment is far from guaranteed. Several senior members of the club’s hierarchy are still backing Steve McClaren for the job, despite shunning Newcastle’s advances on two separate occasions.
