Newcastle United’s search for a new head coach continues to roll on, with Roberto Di Matteo the latest man to be linked with the hot seat.
According to Di Marzio, the Magpies are hoping to ‘start a new project’ and believe Di Matteo would be the ideal candidate to take the club forward, but they would face tough competition from several clubs across Europe – including Napoli and West Ham United.
The former Chelsea boss resigned from his post at Schalke earlier this week, after just seven months with the Bundesliga outfit. Although Roberto made an impressive start to life in Germany, a dismal run of two wins in ten games saw Die Königsblauen miss out on a Champions League spot.
Following his resignation, Di Matteo admitted: “I offered a plan for a possible successful future and what the conditions for that would need to be, but it became clear that the club had a different emphasis. This is why I decided to resign from my position as head coach.”
Whether Lee Charnley will follow up his initial interest in the former Chelsea boss is currently unclear with fresh reports suggesting Steve McClaren is set for ‘formal talks’ with Newcastle in the coming days. Christophe Galtier, Remi Garde and Michael Laudrup are also upon the managing director’s managerial short-list, which was drawn up by Graham Carr.
