After we reported last week that a stay at Saint Etienne is likely for manager Christophe Galtier, it has emerged today that a new shortlist of candidates for the Newcastle manager’s job is being compiled. Another previous target, Thomas Tuchel, is also out of the running after agreeing a deal to be Jurgen Klopp’s successor at Borussia Dortmund.
According to The Guardian, Steve McClaren, Remi Garde, who has taken a year out since after leaving Lyon last year, and Michael Laudrup are the names at the top of an ever-growing shortlist, with the club adamant that they will not be rushed into a decision.
The aim is to have a permanent manager in charge ready for when the players return for pre-season training, with interim manager John Carver also being considered as Alan Pardew’s long-term successor.
Newcastle reportedly approached both Garde and McClaren back in January, when Pardew joined Crystal Palace, but both rejected offers at the time and John Carver was given the job for the remainder of the season.
Steve McClaren has been linked with a move away from current club Derby County, after missing out on promotion from the Championship and enduring a rather unsuccessful campaign at Pride Park.
Ex-Swansea manager Michael Laudrup is keen on a return to English football when his contract with Qatari side Lekhwiya expires this summer, with the board at Newcastle hoping he could emulate Swansea’s attractive and attacking style of football at St James’ Park next season.
