According to L’Equipe, Saint Etienne manager Christophe Galtier is yet to be offered the managerial role at Newcastle United. He has received one offer, though: a contract extension with his current Ligue 1 club.
With his current deal set to expire this summer, it was widely reported that the Frenchman would be on the move, with Newcastle being one of the clubs in which he has been heavily linked to.
Galtier had also been touted as favourite to become the next Marseille manager, after spending two spells with his hometown club as a player and a brief spell in 2000 as their manager. However, club president Vincent Labrune has made clear his desire to keep existing manager Marco Bielsa at the club.
Saint Etienne are enjoying a rather successful season. By bettering Marseille’s result on the final day, they can qualify for the Europa League. They also have a slight chance of qualifying for the Champions League, if they manage to beat Guingamp at home and Monaco lose away at Lorient.
Bearing this in mind, many were shocked that Saint Etienne had allowed his contract to run so close to its expiry, this contract extension offer will not come as a surprise.
As it stands, Galtier is staying put.
