Goals from Remy Cabella, Sammy Ameobi and Yoan Gouffran helped Newcastle coast to a comfortable 3-0 victory over Premier League strugglers Hull City. Here are the player ratings from the Magpie’s first win of the calendar year:
Tim Krul – 7
A few fine saves from the Dutchman helped his side secure their first clean sheet since November, although – as a whole – Hull didn’t pose too much of a threat when going forward.
Daryl Janmaat – 7
Hull’s Andrew Robertson caused the 25-year-old problems early on, but Daryl reacted well and pinned the Scotsman back into his own half, by posing as a far greater threat down the other end of the field.
Mike Williamson – 7
The usually shaky defender registered one of his better performances of the season, by restraining the threat caused by Hull City’s attackers Nikica Jelavic and Abel Hernandez.
Fabricio Coloccini – 6
One to forget for the Argentine. Several unnervy moments and, if it weren’t for Anita’s goal-line clearance, Newcastle’s clean-sheet would have been eradicated by a Coloccini own goal.
Massadio Haïdara – 8
Solid defensive performance from the 22-year-old, who kept Elmohamady at bay and showed great composure on the ball, as well as an excellent work-rate for both attack and defence. Not to mention, Haidara picked up an assist too.
Jack Colback – 6
Hardly put a foot wrong all game, but failed to get as involved as his midfield partner Vurnon Anita, especially when going forward.
Vurnon Anita – 7
An excellent goal-line clearance to prevent an own goal, as well as playing a significant role in the transition from defence to attack, helped his side to a comfortable victory.
Remy Cabella – 9
I’ve run out of superlatives. The Frenchman’s performance was first class, once again. Caused numerous problems throughout the first-half, before eventually scoring Newcastle’s opener just before half-time. After the break, he looked a threat whenever in possession. Man of the match.
Moussa Sissoko – 6
The Frenchman failed to dominate the midfield like he has done in recent weeks, but a decent all-round performance nonetheless.
Sammy Ameobi – 7
His excellent long-range effort, early in the second half, put his side 2-0 up. His pace down the flanks caused the opposition’s defence problems, time and time again. A good performance as a whole.
Ayoze Perez – 7
The young Spaniard was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet, after remaining a threat all afternoon to Dawson and Davies, with his tireless running and fancy footwork.
Yoan Gouffran – SUB
After being gifted a 20minute cameo by John Carver. Hull provided Gouffran with plenty of space, which he capitalised on with a late strike to seal the victory for Newcastle.
Papiss Cisse – SUB
Failed to make any significant impact in his 10 minute cameo, despite a few fancy touches here and there.
Mehdi Abeid – SUB
Entered the fray in injury time as the final seconds remained.
