Benitez hails striker following Everton defeat
Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez has spoken of his happiness with Islam Slimani’s performance against Everton on Monday.
The Algerian international has endured a difficult start to life in Newcastle following his January loan move from Leicester but has returned to fitness in recent weeks.
Slimani led the line for Newcastle as they were defeated 1-0 by the Toffees at Goodison Park. Theo Walcott’s second-half effort was enough to separate the two sides.
Benitez, as quoted by Goal, was quizzed on his feelings about the experienced striker’s display at Everton following the match and spoke of his happiness with the new man’s efforts.
Islam worked hard. The understanding between him and the rest of the team will take some time. In terms of effort, I was happy with him.
Slimani was handed his first start for Newcastle in the game on Monday and will be desperate to string together a run of starts as the 2017/18 campaign draws to a close.
Newcastle fans will hope to see Slimani flourish in the near future as they aim to secure a top half finish this
