Rafa Benitez is set to re-launch his attempts to sign Besiktas midfielder Tolgay Arslan after a failed bid for the German, according to reports.
The 27-year-old attracted interest from many clubs in January, including Chelsea and Bayer Leverkusen, however, Arslan ended up staying at Besiktas.
Newcastle have lost one of their last six games, a run which includes a victory against Manchester United at St. James’ Park and although Premier League survival is the main priority for Benitez, he is already planning for life in the top flight next year.
Newcastle have struggled with a lack of strength in depth this season, and have done well to be in the position they currently are due to these circumstances.
Tolgay has made 36 appearances this season and has been instrumental in Besiktas being in a title fight and reaching the knockout stages of the Champions League.
There are currently four recognised central midfielders at Benitez’ disposal, so adding an extra experienced man in the middle will create some healthy competition.
Newcastle continue their survival fight when they entertain fellow strugglers Huddersfield after the international break, in a game which could go a long way to securing Premier League football next year
