Newcastle United are reportedly aiming to tie down Jamaal Lascelles to a new and improved contract.
The central defender has enjoyed a positive start to the Premier League season, and was the hero on Sunday as Newcastle secured their second win of the season. Lascelles made a goal-line interception to keep things level at Swansea, before rising highest to power home the Magpies’ goal, which proved to be decisive on the day.
Now, as a result of his excellent efforts in recent times, the Newcastle Chronicle are reporting that the club are understood to have already held discussions with the former Nottingham Forest centre-back over a new contract at St James’ Park.
Lascelles contract with Newcastle currently runs until the summer of 2020, but it looks as though the club want to secure his services over a longer period of time given his continuous development.
The report suggests Lascelles is on Gareth Southgate’s radar, too, meaning he could be in with a chance of securing his first ever England call-up at senior level.
