Newcastle are still looking for their first points of the season after they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Huddersfield Town at the John Smith’s Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Aaron Mooy’s goal early in the second half was enough to give the home side a win, taking them to six points from two games, whilst the Magpies are still on zero points after a second consecutive loss.
Here are our Newcastle player ratings from the game:
Rob Elliot - 7
Pretty solid game from the keeper who could do nothing to stop the winning goal.
Javier Manquillo - 6
Did his best to get forward and whip in crosses but didn’t really do much to stand out.
Jamaal Lascelles - 6
Steve Mounie gave him a bit of a tough time but he held his own in that particular battle.
Ciaran Clarke - 7
Made plenty of clearances when the home side looked to press home their advantage.
Chancel Mbemba - 7
Played at left-back and didn’t look out of place. Defended well and attacked with purpose.
Isaac Hayden - 6
Battled will in the middle of the park but his use of the ball was questionable.
Mikel Merino - 7
Saw plenty of the ball and was neat and tidy. Probably Newcastle’s best player.
Matt Ritchie - 7
Only a fine save from Jonas Lossl prevented him from getting on the scoresheet. Saw a lot of the ball and looked threatening when he had it.
Christian Atsu - 5
Didn’t really make an impact on the game.
Ayoze Perez - 5
Missed a decent chance and was rather disappointing. No huge shock when he was taken off late on.
Dwight Gayle - 3
Probably his worst game as a Magpie. Did nothing to influence the game in a positive manner. Deservedly taken off.
Subs
Joselu – 6
Can’t fault his effort but he looked very rusty.
Mo Diame & Jacob Murphy didn’t really get much time to influence the game.
