Newcastle United are making good progress on a deal to bring defender Florian Lejeune to St James’ Park but may miss out on free agent Willy Caballero, according to a report in the Chronicle Live.
The Magpies were looking to pay La Liga side Eibar in two separate installments but have now agreed to Eibar’s demands to pay the £8.7 million up front in order to land the central defender.
There has been plenty of interest in Lejeune with Italian side Roma and London clubs Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal all keeping tabs on the Frenchman’s situation, but it looks like Newcastle are leading the race for Lejeune’s signature.
However, Rafa Benitez may miss out on another target in goalkeeper Caballero who has recently been released from Manchester City.
The Argentinian has had an offer from league champions Chelsea and may opt for a move to London to be Antonio Conte’s back up keeper.
