As this season draws to a close clubs will be making decisions regarding contracts based on the seasons performance. Newcastle has a handful of players who have only a couple of months left on their current deals and with relegation looking more and more likely by the week the wage bill will certainly need to be cut at Newcastle if the club were to be playing their football in the Championship next season.
A few players have been injured for the majority of this season or out on loan, some of which may be useful if the worst was to happen in the next month or so. The decision to sign Seydou Doumbia has baffled some fans, and the option to sign him permanently for a fee at the end of the season seems very unlikely at this point.
The slideshow will go through the Newcastle players out of contract and if they are worthy of a fresh start in the summer.
Sylvain Marveaux
The Frenchman has become somewhat of a forgotten figure around St James’ park, having not made a Premier League appearance since the 2013/14 season. A seemingly out of favour player, however, he does possess some talent as he provided some key assists in keeping the team up in 2013. Previous managers and Rafa Benitez seem to hold no regard towards the player so it’s very unlikely he will receive a new deal this summer.
Steven Taylor
Taylor has enjoyed a return to the side with a first team action but hasn’t covered himself in any glory. Often found wanting in and around the box, Shane Long, for example, eased past him on Saturday for one of the easiest goals of his career. There’s no doubting the man’s passion for the city and club but his ability is very questionable. If we were to go down it certainly wouldn’t surprise me if he was given a one or two-year deal however on current form most fans would be happy to see the back of him.
Gabriel Obertan
The Frenchman is almost back to full fitness and could possibly make some appearances between now and the end of the season, Gabriel is a hard worker and has proved he can provide quality over the last couple of seasons. His injury came at a very bad time as he was enjoying his football, whether he will be given a new deal is hard to call but personally I think he can be an asset to the team.
Rolando Aarons
The Newcastle youngster enjoyed a great preseason but was once again hit by injury and didn’t make an appearance until just before Christmas. Deployed at left back he made a good account for himself but that is ultimately not his position, If the Club can see past his injury troubles and work with him he can be a great talent in the years to come If a deal could be negotiated.
Kevin Mbabu
The Swiss youngster made a fine league debut against Chelsea and became an instant fan favourite for the left back position, however like Aarons is also seemingly injury prone. Newcastle fans would certainly like to see more of him and he would be guaranteed some football next season if he stayed fit in my opinion.
Freddie Woodman
This one is a no-brainer, although we haven’t seen him in first team action for Newcastle he has proved his talents both on loan and through the England youth system. The club would be daft to let him go as he will be the future of Goalkeeping at Newcastle.
