According to the The Chronicle, Mike Ashley will tell Steve McClaren to sign wantaway West Brom striker Saido Berahino for a record transfer fee
An £18m bid was made by Newcastle in the summer, and is still able to be accepted by West Brom should they choose to do so. Newcastle only set their record in July, with the £16.5m acquisition of Gigi Wijnaldum.
The offer is still less than West Brom’s £20m valuation of Berahino, however, with many seeing his presence as a negative impact on the squad, Tony Pulis may accept the hefty bid anyway.
Newcastle have competition for Berahino, with Chelsea also being linked in the past weeks, furthermore Tottenham are thought to be maintaining their summer interest in the player.
Berahino has scored three goals in 15 league appearances this season, and got on the scoresheet in West Brom’s FA Cup draw with Bristol City after coming on in the 63rd minute.
