McClaren identifies the answer to his problems
In a desperate attempt to avoid yet another relegation battle, Newcastle United will look to follow up their initial interest in Queens Park Rangers striker Charlie Austin in January, according to the Brentwood Gazette.
The Magpies have endured a torrid start to the season – picking up just three points in their opening eight league fixtures – but Steve McClaren believes the 26-year-old striker, who has netted seven times in nine appearances this season, could be the answer to their problems.
Austin attracted the attention of chief scout Graham Carr last season and Newcastle monitored his situation throughout the summer, but QPR were unwilling to lower their £15million asking price.
With his contract set to expire at the end of the season, QPR may be forced to finally lower Austin’s price-tag as they’re running out of time to cash in the English hotshot.
Should Newcastle fend off stiff competition from West Ham and land Austin, it would surely pave the way for Papiss Cisse to exit the club. So far this season, the Senegalese striker has only had a bit-part role to play but he has been woeful when called upon.
After their impressive performance against Chelsea, Ayoze Perez and Aleksandar Mitrovic have cemented their place as starters up front – limiting Cisse’s game time further.
