Steve McClaren has confirmed to Mark Douglas of The Chronicle that Queens Park Rangers star Charlie Austin is still on the clubs’ radar and the club could move for him in the future.
The former Swindon Town striker was on Newcastle radar for the majority of the summer, but a move never materialised. However, McClaren will ‘ponder’ a January move according to reports.
Newcastle spent ‘big’ this summer on their attacking options as they added Serbian forward Aleksandar Mitrovic and Marseille midfielder Florian Thauvin to a squad that had been void of investment for a long time. The QPR forward would be a welcome addition to what is already looking like a competitive squad.
Steve McClaren said that the original asking price of Queens Park Rangers was the major stumbling block, however, a January purchase could mean the fee would be sufficiently lower, he told reporters:
“He has been on Newcastle’s radar from the second half of last season and during the summer, and he will stay on the radar, definitely.”
